Simple Way To Revamp A Bathroom

ce64e0fc57b47c14677757807a012873

If your bathroom is looking a little tired, it may not take a complete renovation to bring it back to life.  Some planning and a few simple alterations can go a long way and make your bathroom feel like a brand new space that will wow your visiting friends and family.  We all know that bathrooms serve a pretty important function in our homes; they’re one of a few rooms that the whole family will use daily, and it might be the only room that guests use as well.  It’s one of the rooms that’s most important for potential buyers to like (the bathroom, along with the kitchen, can often be the make it or break it for a sale).  Your bathroom should be functional, but it also can be a place where you can kick your shoes off and relax at the end of a busy week.

The first thing that you should look at when it comes to bathroom revamping is the walls.  Is that paint colour giving your bathroom a case of the blahs?  Maybe it was chosen by the previous owner or tenant, or maybe you painted on a whim and have realized that your paint colour just isn’t working anymore.  Whatever the case may be, painting your bathroom can be the single biggest change you can make in the feel of the room.   Before you grab another can of colour, check out your wall condition.  It doesn’t take a whole lot of elbow grease to fill in small holes and sand them down.  Use a spackle that turns pink to white (wet to dry) so you know when to grab that sandpaper and get to work.  Spend your time getting the wall nice and smooth and then figure out what colour is going to work best.  Even if you’re a person who loves colour, a pale neutral on the walls can actually breathe a lot of life into a space.  Save the punches of colour for your accessories.  Giving your trim and baseboards a fresh coat of white can make a bigger impact that you probably imagine as well.  The key to a good paint job is to take your time and don’t opt for the cheapest paint out there; a good quality paint may actually save you money in the long run as the coverage will be far better than with a cheap, thin paint.

So your walls look a lot better, what now?  Take a look at the vanity mirror.  Often even in brand new houses, the mirror is a large pane of glass with no trim.  If that’s the case and you’re short on budget, use a nice baseboard cut to size to create a frame for your mirror.  Give it a fresh coat of paint in the same colour as your trim and baseboards.  If your mirror is smaller and you’re able to remove it, either update the one you have with paint or search the stores for a mirror that better fits your taste.  The mirror and vanity are often focal points and a great choice can update your entire room.

If your towels, hand towels and facecloths are visible (if they’re on an open shelf or rolled in a basket, for example), you’ll be surprised at how much nicer a matching set in a beautiful, complementary colour can look.  Towels are primarily functional, of course, but they can most definitely serve double duty as decor as well.  Here’s where you can add those punches of colour I mentioned earlier.  If you love red, go for shades of cherry or wine in your bathroom linens.  Teal remains the colour of choice this year and towels come in some gorgeous varieties.  Whatever your choice, always keep them rolled or folded neatly.   Check out matching bathmats in luxurious pile to give your bathroom a boost.

Look up!  Your light fixture might be keeping your bathroom looking dull and it’s not hard to shed more light on the situation.  If you love the fixture, make sure to clean it so it’s free from dust and debris, and check your bulbs.  There are a number of different shades and functions in light bulbs and you’ll want to ensure that yours is doing the job it’s supposed to.  Go for bright white especially in bathrooms that don’t have the benefit of natural light through a window.  Your lighting should make your bathroom feel welcoming and certain lights can make it appear dingy.

Your decor should also complement your bathroom colours and style, so ensure that it’s doing the job you want it to.  Craft projects can be fun and look store bought, so if you have the knack, get to work putting a few things together for a room you’ll love!

DIY THANKSGIVING DECORATIONS

Thanksgiving is crammed between Halloween and Christmas and hardly gets the attention it deserves. Décor often switches from cobwebs and pumpkins to garlands and Christmas trees, giving no thought to the holiday that lies in between. In reality, it’s impractical to spend lots of money on decorations that can only be used for a few weeks out of the year. Luckily there are a variety of things that can be done to reuse some of the decorations you already have (even ones you might not be aware of). There’s an abundance of unique, creative ideas floating around cyberspace, but we’ve saved you the hassle of searching by compiling this list of our top seven.

1.    Festive Candle Holders
Hollow out the center of your small pumpkins or apples (it’s done easiest with a drill). Use them to make candle holders, and embellish the base of the candle with leaves, berries, mini pine cones or whatever else you find lying around. Try grouping a few together and using them as a centerpiece for your big feast.

2.    Candy Corn Flower Pot
Fill a glass jar or trifle dish with a bag of candy corn, and use it as a base to arrange several flowers. The corn is a festive tribute to the Indians, and the plant will add a little greenery. Be creative when you plant selection – add some fall leaves, fresh flowers, or even an arrangement of twigs.

3.    Fall Leaf Lantern
Add a little ambiance to your room by creating a lantern with leaves you’ve gathered from outside. Start by pressing the leaves, to get them nice and flat.   Then glue them to a clean, glass jar using Modge Podge. Wait 20 minutes for it to dry and then layer another coat of Modge Podge on top of the leaves to seal them. Lastly, place a candle in the jar and your lantern is complete. Adding a variety of leaf colors looks best and adds a subtle, warm glow to any room.

4.    Metallic Pumpkins and Gourds
Give all your pumpkins, squash, and gourds a makeover by coating them in metallic or glitter spray paint. Shades of gold, bronze, and sunset orange are perfect for Thanksgiving, and the sparkly luster adds a regal air.   Arrange your finished beauties in a large glass tumbler, apothecary jar, or atop a cake stand to complete the look. If you’d like to take it a step further, paint pumpkin stems brown to really make them pop.

5.         Colored Pine Cones
Nothing says fall quite like pine cones, and they can be a stunning decorative piece when given a coat of paint. A selection of contrasting fall-hued colors look beautiful on an entry table. Pick up a combination of small spray paint cans in maroon, gold, dark brown, sunset orange, mustard yellow, mossy green, or cream, and color pine cones to your heart’s content. Be creative with color combinations – you can’t go wrong! Cones can be displayed in a large bowl, glass vase, or even strung as a garland.

6.    Pressed Leaf Art
Display the beauty of the outdoors by creating focal pieces with colorful fall leaves. Press leaves between books, and wait until leaves are fully dry. Place the pressed leaves between double sided glass frames to accentuate their silhouettes and bold colors. The simplicity of this decoration creates a tranquil, relaxing environment.

 7.    Corn Wreath
There are a couple different options for corn wreaths, depending on the look you’re going for and the amount of money you want to spend. You can make your wreath out of candy corn or Indian corn.   The candy corn wreath is simply a Styrofoam wreath covered in black duct tape with candy corn attached by a hot glue gun. Hang the wreath with a giant brown or red ribbon to give a Thanksgiving vibe.   The Indian corn wreath is even easier. Purchase a straw wreath and hot glue the corn to a straw wreath with the husks pointing outward.

Decorating for Thanksgiving can be easy and frugal when you take advantage of items you already have around the house or the yard. What better way to celebrate the season of thanks than the beauty of the outdoors? So open your mind, take a walk around the block, and visualize what you can create.

It’s not easy when you have kids, a husband who thinks everything magically cleans itself, and a puppy who is too busy barking at everyone that passes by your house (yes, my puppy sits on her throne by the window and barks at anything and everything).

I completely understand where you’re coming from. After working all day, it’s hard to have any energy left to tend to your home. Nobody is judging, I’m here to help.

BACK TO SCHOOL BREAKFAST IDEAS

Back to School Breakfast Ideas

Mornings trying to get kids out the door are hectic enough, especially the first few weeks back to school. Breakfast shouldn’t be hard; it should be simple.

Wake up, make coffee, drink coffee, ponder life questions, get dressed, think about the kids mess in the living room, wake up the family, make breakfast, gather the children’s clothes, put all their school stuff together, yell a few times, make sure everyone is dressed, eat breakfast, ask your husband for help with the kids, drink more coffee, brush teeth, feed the puppy, and gather all belonging and out the door before 8:10 AM to make it to school at 8:30 AM.

In all that chaos you are supposed to feed your family a nutritious well balanced breakfast. I’m a huge fan of wraps, everyone enjoys them, and it’s not so messy. To make breakfast easier here are a few ideas that I have put together.

Back to School Breakfast Ideas

Scrambled Eggs, Potatoes and Cheese in a wrap

Scramble eggs and potatoes, top with cheese, put it in a wrap. No mess, and it’s a hit.

Left Over Breakfast Wrap

If you have either beef, pork, or chicken and spring veggies from last night’s dinner: cut it up, or shred it and cook it in a skillet with eggs. Put it in a wrap. BAM, delicious gourmet breakfast.

Granola, Yogurt, and Fruit

Smash a Natural Valley Crunchy Granola bar, layered with vanilla yogurt, topped with berries & strawberries.

Eggs, Avocado, Hummus Wrap

Cook eggs to your liking. Slice up a few pieces of avocado. Put eggs and avocado in wrap with a spoon of hummus, roll it up and enjoy.

Bacon, Egg’s and Cheese Wrap

Cook Bacon. Scramble eggs, top with cheese. Spread a tiny bit of mayo on your wrap, add scrambled eggs and cheese, then top it with crispy bacon. Roll it up and enjoy.

Egg Whites, Tomatoes, Basil & Goat Cheese

Scrambled egg whites. Place in wrap, top with: Fresh tomatoes, Fresh Basil and goat cheese. Roll it up and enjoy. (If you have time, roast the tomatoes before placing them in wrap. It will give the wrap and extra kick)

Peanut Butter & Jelly, Fresh Fruit Wrap

Spread your favorite type of peanut butter and jelly over a whole wheat wrap. Top with Bananas and Strawberries. Roll it up and Enjoy.

-Everything is cooked in extra virgin olive oil, no butter, no vegetable oil.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You have to make it enjoyable for you and the kids. They have to go out there and conquer the world, make it a little easier by making them a breakfast they could enjoy before school.

Plumbing Fact: Over $100,000 were spent on a study to determine whether most people put their toilet paper on the holder with the flap in front or behind.

Don’t Make The Toilet The Star of the Show!

The Star of the Show Shouldn't be the Toilet

You woke up this morning and decided to remodel your bathroom. I would love to tell you that it’s that easy. It usually takes time, money and lot’s of planning.

When remodeling a bathroom, you’re able to start fresh.  When entering a bathroom, you want your eyes to focus on the tub/shower/vanity/chandelier, not your toilet. Unless, you really are trying to make your toilet the main focus, because you’re purchasing: a custom, historic, or extremely futuristic piece.

The bathroom is the number one used room in the house, they are a necessity, you should put effort in the design. If you’re remodeling your bathroom, are you remodeling the bathroom: to increase value to your home? To add space? Improve layout? To update it? Because you have to sell the house? Add technology? Or, because you’re bored?

Which bathroom in the house are you remodeling? Each bathroom is different.

This is where you should focus in the bathroom…..

Hall Bathroom- Wall Design, Lighting, Chandelier

Master Bathroom– Tub

Kid’s Bathroom- Wall Decor

Bachelor/Bachelorette Bathroom- Tile Design or Wall Paper…. Flap Screen/Touch Screen Computer….  LED lights

Guest Bathroom- Vanity & Mirror

As a plumbing contractor, I’m able to move your plumbing (of course you have to be reasonable on where you want it moved). If you have the time, we are able to start from scratch. We could redesign your bathroom not just remodel the bathroom.

Here are some very unique toilets for your enjoyment.

I Love Going to the Pool in the Summer!

Kevin and Jack

Summer is here and kids are out of school. We have longer days and beautiful hot nights. Most people, enjoy going outside for activities during the Summer time. I for one, love being outside when the weather is warm. Growing up in Midlothian, my grandmother always took me to the pool. I couldn’t get enough of it. She would take me to the pool every day. Maybe it was because she saw how much I loved it or to wear me out, I was a rambunctious little kid. I look back at all the great memories I had at the pool in Summer. Now, with my own child, I see how much he loves playing in the water. He can’t get enough of the pool.

Stop whatever you’re doing and GO OUTSIDE, enjoy the pool, enjoy this beautiful weather. If you can’t go to the pool, or don’t have one by you, here are a few ways to enjoy water in the Summer.

WATER ACTIVITIES

·       Turn on the Sprinkler

·       Buy a baby pool

·       Rent a bouncy house with a pool

·       Spray your kids with the water hose

·       Water balloon fights

WATER PARK’S AROUND TOWN

·       Centennial Park in Orland Park, 15600 West Ave Orland Park

·       White Water Canyon in Tinley Park, 8221 W. 171st Street Tinley Park

·       Splash Park in Frankfort, 22108 S. 80th Ave Frankfort

·       Heritage Fall Water Park in Romeoville, 101 Troxel Ave Romeoville

·       Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park in Woodridge, 8301 Janes Ave Woodridge

Don’t over work yourself in the Summer. Your kids are out of school, take a few days off and go have some fun.

Does Anybody NOT Take Their Phone with Them to the Bathroom?

Phone in Toilet

It is 2016, we have the world at our finger tips. They have an App for anything you could imagine, and not to mention most people are wrapped up in Social Media. What did people do in the bathroom before there were mobile phones? In our household we actually have books all around the house, including the bathroom. Our bathroom has a great selection of interesting books. Nothing to complex, mostly facts about History, how to guides, and of course Uncle John’s Fully Loaded Bathroom Reader. There was a study that was done several years ago about how much time was spent sitting in the bathroom. It was said, we spend 3 years of our lives sitting in the bathroom. That was before the smart phone came out. I could tell you that everyone spends way more time on their phone in the bathroom now. Parents, have always ran away to the bathroom from their kids when they were just too much to handle. Now, parents more often than not, pretend that they need to go to the bathroom just so they could go on Social Media. I’m not judging anybody; I’m actually writing this post from my bathroom. Bathrooms have become our new offices. Back in the day, a lot of people wanted an “office” in their house. Now, all you need is a bathroom and your smart phone.

I remember when I first became a plumber, my customers use to have newspapers, magazines, and books, in their bathrooms. I can honestly say, I rarely see that now a day. We need to bring back reading in our bathrooms, or keep the phone usage in the bathroom in moderation.

Time Spent In Bathroom

Above is an example of phone usage in the bathroom, I found on Instagram.

You need light in your bathroom. Unless you have a skylight in your bathroom and tons of windows, you need great lighting. Where do you place the lighting is the question?

Both sides of the mirror.

Over the tub.

It all depends on your style. What kind of person are you? What do you see yourself surrounded around? What colors do you love to decorate with? If you had a choice where would you live? What’s your favorite type of restaurant?

How you answered the questions above, is your Design Style. If you don’t understand your answers here is a link to help you choose.

If you have the extra money to add windows for natural lighting in your bathroom, that’s a Home Run. Natural lighting in your bathroom is always great. You could do a lot by placing and installing the perfect fixtures, but having a large window or two in your bathroom could give you the perfect Natural Light everyone desires. Before you begin your project sit down and plan out what exactly you want to do in your bathroom. After you have thought about what you have in mind, plan out the perfect spots to install lighting. Let your electrician and or remodeler know. They will be more than glad to work with your design idea.
